Chinoiserie – Influences of Asia and China
Chinoiserie is emerging as a trend prevalent in home décor and interior design. A fit for both the traditional home or a contrast in a more modern home with unique Asian and Chinese influence bringing worldly sophistication to any space.
The style of Chinoiserie doesn’t come from China at all. Actually, originating in Europe in the 17th century, gaining popularity in the 18th Century when people wanted to bring scenes from exotic, far away Orient into their homes. A fabric may include a palace in India, with tropical palm trees. Monkeys hidden in the foliage of a tree pattern wallpaper. Or a dinner service in Royal Blues and White with pagodas on. A truly unique trend combining elements of real and fantasy.
Our wallcovering designs, ‘Harewood’ are named after one of the Treasure Houses of England, Harewood House in Yorkshire.
Examples of Chinoiserie still exist in Harewood House today.

Chinoiserie patterns were originally created to appear hand drawn, in keeping with their earliest appearance. Colours were soft and muted, created with the use of water colour paints.
At 1838 Wallcoverings we use the traditional method of Surface Printing for our Harewood design. This technique creates a beautiful hand painted effect. Using chalky, water based opaque inks – it’s a fitting tribute to the original hand drawn design.
The Harewood design is available in six colourways, produced on the finest quality non woven substrate (paste the wall). This helps retain all the charm of the aged originals with the welcome addition of foil bases for a high shine effect, metallic backgrounds to give a sense of luxury and subtle chalky hues for a classical feel.
